UBCMUN 2016 Rebranding
I believe my interests in graphic design, particularly print design all began in middle school. Since then, I haven't stopped designing. I engaged in every opportunity I could (and can) to try to share my designs with other people. As the Director of Design for UBCMUN in 2016, I was hired to rebrand the entire conference including designing a delegate handbook, the website, and all the materials that promoted the conference.

The Delegate Handbook
Process
I draw a lot of inspiration when designing publication from magazines I enjoy reading. I love having very contrasted text over dark backgrounds. Of course, the colors I picked are based on the actual colors of the United Nations (UN). The UN is best represented by having a sky blue on its logo and a lot of its branding. Having a clear san-serif font is possibly a little more engaging than having an old-fashioned serif font.
Promotional Materials
Inspiration
I did not want all of the materials to be blue as I thought that would be pretty mundane. I decided to add a pop of color, which is actually based off of the official school logo of UBC (at least in one of their older ones). In their actual logo, there's a hint of gold/mustard yellow. I decided to incorporate that into the designs.
Background Guides
Background Guides serve as an important resource for prospective delegates and attendees because they provide all the nerdy (and exciting) topics of the committees at the conference. I remember when I was in college, I really did a book by its cover in terms that if the cover design of a book is attractive I would be more likely to pick it up and read the synopsis and summary.
Inspiration and Process
When designing these background guides, I wanted them to be lively and engaging. I also wanted each committee to be represented by a different color because each committee should have their own character. Besides, it would be easier to distinguish one from another with the color. It also opened doors for me to design the name tags for all the attendees based on the color I assigned to each committee, which made the design process more fun.
Iteration
Well, I didn't really have a real design flow going. But instead of wanting to add too much color into the design, I wanted to simplify it. I decided that the third one has the best juxtaposition of typography and a background photo. The contrast was stark but yet subtle enough to create too much tension.
